masala is a magazine about India, created through a network of current and former volunteers, foundations, and in close exchange with Indian experts, friends, and organizations. Our aim is to offer readers a way to connect with India—colorful, diverse, and multifaceted, just like the Indian spice blends known as masala.
In Germany, India is sometimes portrayed in a rather one-dimensional way, often associated only with poverty, violence against women and children, or environmental disasters. We believe this perspective is overly simplistic and unbalanced. An entire country can sometimes seem to be judged by the actions of a few, while the contradictions and complexities that come with its immense diversity are too often overlooked.
We hope to foster greater respect for a country where we were able to learn so much and gain invaluable experiences. We stand for tolerance and against sweeping generalizations. Above all, though, we hope to inspire you—and to build a bridge between Germany and India.
Who are we?
We’re a group of young people who have lived—or are currently living—in India as volunteers. Since November 2014, masala has been a project of grenzenlos e.V.. We’re always happy to welcome new people, fresh ideas, and inspiration of all kinds.
How’s it going?
In November 2014, we published our very first issue on the theme of “Family,” and the feedback we received gave our motivation a real boost. Issue number two, focusing on “Health,” was released in February.
And the best part: masala is completely free.
We want everyone who’s interested to be able to read it. That’s why masala is available online through our blog. If you’d prefer a printed copy, you can simply subscribe by sending an informal email (including your name and address) to masala(at)grenzenlos.org.
Printing and shipping cost around €4 per issue. By choosing to cover these costs voluntarily, you help us remain independent in what we write and publish.
